Freedom Isn't Free

Happy 4th of July! What a joyful time it is to see the decorations and celebrations happening nationwide celebrating our freedom as a nation for 250 years. I love seeing the flags, gatherings in community and the many reminders of what is worth celebrating. As I have shared previously, I am an Air Force brat, as they say. One who grew up with a parent serving in the Air Force for all of my growing up years. We lived in different states and countries, usually on the military base.

It was our way of life to see my dad in his flight suit or uniform daily. We heard the jets as they flew their training exercises. We saw the literal army of men and women it took to keep everything running efficiently. We saw other moms and dads in their uniforms. They saluted one another. They saluted the flag. They were all living on that military base, carrying out different roles, working together to accomplish the mission of serving and protecting the nation. There was a strong sense of community and purpose, and we all felt the importance of it.

Every time we moved to a new state or country, there was a similar experience of community and higher calling. My brother and I were just kids growing up, doing the things kids do. We were not actively training or standing guard to defend our nation. But we saw what others were doing. We saw everyone stop where they were to salute the flag as it was lowered every night on base. We heard the conversations. We were aware of the sacrifices being made by those who were on active duty to maintain a state of readiness to defend at any time. Always training and preparing so that if the real day for battle came, they would be ready to protect and defend the freedoms that others had provided for them. The freedoms that we now experience.

The freedoms we experience as Americans are not free. They were paid for in blood and sweat, time away from home and countless other forms of sacrifice by those who came before us. It is an important reality to remember and a responsibility to steward.

As Christians freedom has an even greater spiritual implication. Our freedom wasn’t free. It cost our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ the greatest sacrifice of all time. He gave His blood and body for us. He was tortured for us as a prisoner of the spiritual and political war. He sacrificed time away from a perfect Heavenly home and countless other forms of sacrifice for you to have the privilege of freedom in Christ, freedom from slavery, freedom to approach His very throne of grace with confidence. The freedom you experience right now in America as Christians wasn’t free. It came at a high price to Jesus, and to the many believers who lived before us.

I encourage you to reflect on this 250th anniversary of freedom in America. Prayerfully discuss with Jesus:

1) Thank God for those, known and unknown who sacrificed for the freedom you now experience.

2) If you walk with Jesus as your Lord and Savior, thank God for sending Jesus and for those who sacrificed for you, taught you, discipled and invested in you to help you walk in freedom.

3) Thank God that you are a Child of God, no longer a slave to sin.

4) What freedom or blessing do you carry that you are especially grateful for? How are you using that gift to help others in your community?

5) What legacy of freedom will you leave for others will walk in after you are gone?
